illuminate speedo
one problem SVA has with bike speedos is that they need to be lit up when the side lamps are lit.
so ....
a) is it ok* to have a separate switch for the speedo lamp?
b) if not, then is it ok* to have it lit all the time when the ignition is on?
* ok in both cases meaning ok for SVA.

why dont you just wire it up to sidelights?

a good point, but here is why.
Firstly I would need to dismantle the column stalk switches to locate the live wire, followed by somehow tapping into it. all my wiring is wrapped
and fixed into place so work involved there. easier would be to take a long wire as far as the lamp but gain same problem - do I need to hide the
wire under wrapping or is cable tying a singe wire to the loom acceptable?
putting a 9v battery behind the dash and a switch is much less effort.
as said, this is plan B that is not meant to be a permanent feature.
if plan A fails, it being a DC motor driven speedo), then I will have no option but to shell out 200 smackeroonies for electronic speedo. time is
running out for me to complate plan a before SVA.

Yup- must admit I just made up a little splitter / extension wire from one of the other dial lamp connectors. Few female spade connectors, few male
connectors, bit of wire. Job done....
Only trouble was that the SVA man (1st test) said the speedo read-out was too small for him to read... not sure what the regulations are, I expect its
up to interpretation...

Why don't you get a 12v LED from Maplin and mount it to point at the speedo/dash area? It can be some way away.

doh - yep - I can do that, cold weather has frozen my brain.
yep - plan is to have a LED for it.

It's amazing how the simplest solution is usually the last one to come to mind...
Tried to think of a way of working out the standard timing curve for the 2D map on the ST ECU.... After working out a cunning plan using a PIC
microprocessor to analyse the ST trigger wheel signal to indicate TDC and then another to anaylse the coil signal versus the #1 PIC signal to work out
a % delay I realised I could infact do the same with a strobe sensor and a timing wheel  Doh!!!!!

i would just use 1 pic at 20Mhz with 2 inputs aivailable you should be easy on track to log the data to its internal memory
RPM, SPARK DIFF to the internal ram then while booting or on another input toggle it could just send that of to a com poort.
what i would do is let it detect the spark and then measure the time to TDC.
that can directly be ouputted to the RS-232 port. RPM could be included in the datastream..
