Striker 4A-GE Alternator Gone Phutt

I've just had a flat battery problem and it turns out that the altrernator's B+ has been touching the steering column. (hidden by a sock) It looks like the regulator.
I can't seem to find anyone to sell me a Nippon Denso regulator. any ideas? A new alternator is £160 plus VAT so not an option.
The original engine is a Corolla but I think similar alternators were fitted to some Rovers.
Has anyone converted to one of the tiny 40A alternators?
Suggestions please...
