speed transducer

I have been working on my speedo setup tonight, I have 1 wire from the speedo marked signal which goes to the sensor?, so what i have done is connected this wire to a spare crankshaft position sensor and the other terminal on the cps to ground. I then stuck a gap tooth gypsy in a drill and spun it in front of cps and low and behold my speedo needle increased to 20mph. (unfortunetly the gypsy is now to dizzy to continue with more testing at a higher drill speed so i have had to call it a night) Now i need to get one of those wheel things that fit between the prop and flange or could i just set the cps close to the halfshaft bolts and try.
(no gypsies where hurt during the testing procedure )
