CDI unit

Is there any definitive way to test a Cdi unit. Ihave one wwhere the resistance values on certain configurations are over double what the spec book says. Honda says replace if that`s the case.

Problem is that it`s 160 quid and aint sure if it is the cause of my problem. A lot of guys have said don`t go by the resistance values. Can`t swop it out for someone elses as rare as hens teeth. Not a car engine but thought I would try on here as our pool of knowledge is so good.

Not sure if this helps you or not, but you can get a Honda C90 cdi unit to run almost any 2 Stroke bike engine, see instructions on this page.....

And a C90 CDI should cost you no more than a few quid.

Thanks for replies guys. It is an 8hp fourstroke outboard. I seen that article on the 90s. This is a sealed in resin unit.

The engine cuts out when on load periodically. It always restarts and idles but some times takes five or six attempts to move forward when knocked into gear. The carb is full when it happens. There are no air leaks. Carb has been boiled and cleaned with compressed air.

Ignition coil and pulser coil changed out for s/h items with EXACTLY same results.

There is only a problem in drive. It runs in neutral. There is a neutral switch which stops the engine being started in gear. I have bypassed the switch.........no difference. However the switch feeds into the CDI. The resistance readings on that neutral switch feed are WAY high over the figures I have in W/M .

This leads me to suspect that if the part of unit is faulty then it may be cutting out power in forward. I could be speaking in tongues though
