Speedo Pickups?
I am wondering about the different types of speedo pickups. I've just bought an Acewell unit that uses a red switch type magnetic affair or a
hall sensor pickup. Im not that happy with a reed switch, they are just bicycle items for me. I fancy something more substantial.
Working in the OEM automotive service we have poka yokes and machine sensors that are proximity sensors. They look like hollow threaded bar with a
sealed end on then and the wires out the other end.
Can these be used for the speedo pickup? They don't need a magnet and for me are a lot more reliable than the reed switches. I know the pickup
for ZZX9R speedo just looks at the edges of teh sprocket nut, are thes prox sensors?
Am I right thinking they are more reliable?
And, are ABS sensors prox sensors??

I used an ABS sensor from my donor 'free' with the car and just needs lumps of metal to create a pulse, prop bolts for example. or a
toothed wheel.
You will not easily trigger the dash by flicking the sensor by hand, if your donor had ABS then you may still have the triggers on the hubs.

If the original sensor is a reed switch then it does not generate a voltage it just completes the circuit, an ABS sensor produces a voltage output and
would not work.It should be possible to use a three wire proxiity switch wired across the inputs and supplied with 12v power to the supply lead.
I have a bike speedo on my car and it has worked fine with the supllied reed switch up to 120mph, you could look for a more heavy duty type of reed
switch if you were concerned about it but i would fit it and see how it works.

I dont know if this set up is any good but its what i settled on. The parts are from Burton cost about £56. The pick up is from a mk6 escort or the
last of the fiestas and the adapter aint worth the £14 but i got it anyway. part numbers REVFSS and REVT9-A

The "sealed hollow tube with wires" sounds very much like a hall effect sensor. Where-as a reed relay gives a full-voltage signal, a hall
effect sensor gives a low amplitude signal (or at least the two two-wire ones do). You can get 3 wire sensors that have built-in amplifiers to give
bigger signals but I don't think they're full-voltage (ie 13v) signals...
I wouldn't worry.... Many gauges use reed relays without a problem. In fact, hall effect sensors are often more of a nuisance because you need a
minimal air-gap (0.5-1.5mm typically)....

I had an ETB electronic speedo in my cat which used a hall effect sensor and a disk with holes in it sandwiched between the dif and propshaft to
provide the signal.
