Ballast resistor

Anyone know where I can get a ballast resistor of a Transit or Mk2? Can't be bothered to trawl the scrappers.

Alternatively, if I run my ballasted coil at 12v, apart from it getting hotter, what are the consequences?
Should I just get a 12v coil?

Cheers,

Mad

If you need a new coil, get a 12v one and leave out the ballast resistor. If the coil you've got is good enough, then get a ballast resistor.

Don't run a 9v coil off 12v - it won't last very long!

Seen as they are nearly £20, I might run the 9v one until it dies at 12v, then get a 12v one.

It will die a lot quicker than you imagine! You'll be lucky to get a few hours out of it.

It will also get hot, some contain cooling fluid that may get sprayed around, and it may catch fire.

Is it worth the risk?

Point taken! Might try to exchange it for a 12v one at Halfords. Still have the receipt and box and i've only had it a week.

Will and 12v 2 connector coil do the job?

Yes, unless you're doing serious stuff to the engine, when you might want a fatter spark.

Just make sure that the coil's got the connectors you want - some have lucas connectors and others have threaded rods.

I got a balast resister from my local Ford dealer and it cost me about £5.

Try your local ford garage perhaps...
