alternator wiring code - XFLOW

does anybody which pin is which, or what colour is what, on a alternator on a Xflow, originally in a escort mexico?? im assuming the alternators would all be the same and it isnt charging my battery at all, first i want to check the wiring and renew it as ive been doing away with the loom in favour of new wiring... any help appreciated!

... also where do the wires connect to? logic tells me the battery but it may not be that simple and there appears to be 3 wires.

i cant help with which is which, but often (on mine at least) there is one wire to the battery, on the the dash for the warning light, and one to a socket on the carb for a choke warmer or something like that.

maybe tell by the terminals?

mines a 1600 pinto not an x flow BTW

There are 2 kinds found on Ford engines like the Xflow - one has terminals and the other has a 'euro-connector' made up of 2 big pins and a little one.

I have the second type, and therefore is the only one I can advise on! The 2 big pins are the power output (same connection - allows use of 2 thinner wires to carry the high current), connected to the solenoid and from there on to the battery. The 3rd pin goes to the dash warning light. The earth through the engine and its earth strap completes the circuit.

yep mines the latter type, same as yours... i didnt realise there was a connection to the warning light, now i know they are both the same I can have a fiddle and see if its giving anything out when its running.... is it posssible that the alternators unhappy if i havent got that smaller wire connected anywhere - as i know this caused grief on a friends renault - may not be the same in this case.

Yes - you have to connect a filament bulb in the warning light circuit (not a LED) as this actuates the field windings to get the alternator to start generating current.
