You're quite correct they've been made a mandatory light in the IVA.
It can be run from a switch on the dash, but if it is you need a telltale lamp/buzzer.
From the draft IVA manual page 141
Reversing lamps must operate by selection of reverse gear, or be fitted with a telltale warning device.

Well I've just dicovered the answer to a question I didn't know I was asking!
bought a second hand striker which had a back buzzer (disconected) and a spare switch on the dash (also disconected, but the wire next to it runs to
the reverse light)
do I need to reconect these for the MOT?

not sure but if reverse lamp is fitted, it has to work,
my landrover has not reverse lamp so they are not compulsroy although this may be an age related requirement.
look on MOT site to see what's what.

Have had a look at the MOT site and wasn't sure, so rang my MOT station who look after my regular car and they said there is no need for a
reverse light for MOT and if one is fitted it doesn't matter whether it works or not (doesn't help with your SVA though)
