diode codes
OK all you electronic geniuses...
can someone tell me an equivalent number for the following diode and zenner diode?
1n4004
1n5325b or 1n5355b
I am trying to rig up a solution so that my rev counter reads correctly (currently half) and found a solution that involves 2 diodes (1n4004) and 1
zenner diode?(1n5325b or 1n5355b)... seems simple enough to put together but getting hold of the components seems a bit harder.... these are listed as
discontinued by RS components
was hoping they might have them in store in Maplins in town but don't know what equvalents are.......

any of the 1n400x series would be fine- Maplins would likely have the 1n4001 diodes.

The Zener diodes are 18v.
Maplin do a BZX79C at 18v but its 0.5w compared to 5w for the 1n5355b. Then again, they may have just used the 1n5355b for the volts not the watts (it
depends on the design).

1n5355 is 18v .5w zener so a BZX79C schould be Ok. 1n4001 as above , ordinary diode.
I'd be interested to know what the plan is?

The 1N4001 has a reverse breakdown of only 50v which is too low for this application. A 1N4004 or above e.g. 1N4005, 1N4006 OR 1N4007 will be ok.
As for the zener, anything with a breakdown voltage of 15v or so will be ok, the power dissipation will be minimal e.g 1N4744A, 1N965B, BZV85-C15,
BZX55-C15 etc. Use the parametric search function on the Farnell web site, it works very well.

The design takes a tap off both input signal wires to the zetec coil pack and passes them each through a 1n4004 they then join together and pass
backwards? Through the zenner.

Okay, so scrub the 1n4001 and go for something with a higher x number in the 1n400x series than the 1n4004 (as already said!!!)...

I wa working from a diagram i found online but looking into it I guess it should have read 5352....
I have just been in to Maplins to see what they had and managed to get .....
2x 1N4004S
1x 1N5352BRL
not sure what he extra letters on the end stand for? but for the sum total of 63p I thought it was worth it!
Now to get my daugther to solder it up for me - as she is so much better with a soldering iron!

Just a thought - when I stuck a V8 in my mx5 I was able to adjust the mx5 tacho to display correctly with the V8 ignition. Basically, the instrument
manufacturers don't manufacture a load of different tachos for different engines, they make just 1 with an adjusting pot on. All you have to do
is find it & twiddle it! On the mx5 there was only 1 pot on the little board in the tacho so it was easy.
You never know, you might get lucky too......
