More Megajolt Questions
Ive linked the laptop to my megajolt today.Used a serial (DB9) to usb converter cable to link them. Thought it was working initially as powered mj up
(engine not running) and ignition advance gauge changed to show 12 deg, also got a response when turned tps manually. Specified the com port via my
computers device manager as instructed by autosport labs operating guide started engine but nothing....just getting 'could not open port'
message in the status bar.
I did have to load some software from a disc that came with my DB9 - USB cable so could it be that the com port is being blocked by that.......ive no
idea.

I did exactly the same last week when my last Serial equipped laptop died.
Had no problems with the converter cable, but, don't forget if you put the usb plug in a different port on your laptop the com port id changes.

Yes, mines a prolific chipset, which do you have? if you look on Autosport labs site there are known problems with some converter chipsets.
The port spec in device manager will tell you the type.

I had problems using Megatune software. Mines a prolific type too. Most of them are.
I now run Tunerstudio software and have no connection problems.
Can you use Tunerstudio with megajolt?
You say that it seemed to connect initially. Had you loaded the adaptor software at that stage?

sorry i'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to chip sets and driver versions etc etc....i was brought up wth a sinclair spectrum where you
recorded the computer programs onto a cassette tape...!!!
Ive had a look on my device manager and i think ive got a prolific chipset and the version of my driver i think is 1.5.0.0 dated 09/04/2002.
Ive read the autosport labs forum and laptop failing to talk to MLJ appears to be a very common problem.....
Think i will hook the timing light up tomorrow just to make sure ignition is advancing with revs even if just to re assure me it is working on the
basic pre loaded map.
One thing i did notice was the speed of the driver was set at 9600 bpm, sure the autosport forum suggest a much higher transfer speed so ive reset it
to 34500bpm.....
Geoff dont know whether i'd loaded the adaptor software when i first turned it on...didnt even realise at first that the adaptor cable needed
its own software/driver, thought it was just a cable. Although i did get a small cd with what appear to be loads of different drivers on it...

Check your driver is installed properly:
Plug the adapter cable in.
Put the CD in, navigate to the CD directory with the same name as your OS - XP Vista etc.
Run driver.exe or driver. bat can't remember which it is...
9600 bpm is fine, spent a couple of hours with it hooked up over the weekend.

I'm using driver version 2 0.13.130 dated july2009, downloaded from the prolific website.
I suggest you download the latest available.
You need to check your port settings.
9600 baud
stop bits 1
flow control none
Easily checked in Device Manager.
You can do all this just with the cable plugged in. No need to be connected to car.
If you have more than one usb plug into each in turn and check in device manager for the port numbers.
The mj setting needs to match the port number in use.
Give me a call if and when you get stuck. I might be able to help.
Geoff.
