Simple Ignition Circuit

Due to a lack of funds for other areas of my build.

I've decided I like to try and get the engine:
a. turning over
b. fired up running on bike carbs and limp home on edis (until I can afford a mega jolt)

its a 1.8 cvh engine

I have the sierra wiring loom, at least the engine bay bit and the connectors for the switchs and the fuse box.

I will buy a premier loom at some point but for now I wanted to get it running with what I've got.

So the question is for the a and b. what do I need, I'm temped just to use the connectors from the sierra and do the basics to get the starter, fuel pump and ignition ciruit running.

Any guidance, schematics that might be helpful
Thanks

Mike

had mine running a couple of weeks ago. i had the ford crank sensor, coil pack and edis wired up as per the megajolt diagrams, but without megajolt connected. the wiring for that part is dead simple.
does the sierra parts you got have all the right ignition parts sensor, edis, coil, and trigger wheel already?

if you don't have a trigger wheel, contact andyw7de, he should be able to sort you out

as for fuel pumps and stuff, initially, i just used a lawnmower petrol tank connected to the carbs as a gravity fed.
if you have a fuel pump then you just need 12v to it. i powered the coil pack and edis off the 12v battery. didn't wire up for the alternator etc or run belts to it.

so basically:
1, engine earth to battery, main 12v on starter to battery.
2, + and - for the edis to the battery terminals using a fuse, coil only needs + as it earths through the spark plugs and engine
3, + to fuel pump, and - if the earth doesn't work through the chassis yet
4, connect a lamp for the oil pressure, as thats important! make sure you get good pressure
5, touch the solenoid power to 12v+ on the battery will get the engine turning over, and if your trigger and sensor are all set up, it should fire!

to just turn over, + and - on the battery to starter and engine block, solenoid to 12v+ and it should turn over ok

i hope theres nothing i've missed there... if i8 have someone please say!

It was a carbed CVH so no it doesn't have the the right connectors.
But It does have a trigger wheel as I think the CVH was hybrid electronic distributor.

I'd like to wire the starter in properly

So pos direct from battery
Neg earth strap from gearbox to chassis
Chassis to battery neg

And it would be nice to get it to turn over off the key so I guess I just need to wire in the ignition switch to the solenoid +12v on crank position, then supply a +12v to the coil pack edis and pump from the ignition switch. Sounds fairly easy just to get it running, do I need any fuses or relays for the above?

Cheers

ah, ok, i thought you meant you just wanted it to run cheap as possible, just to get it running, so ok, yeah, ignition on the 'run' terminal on the key, solenoid on the start terminal, or however they're labled, will work fine.
best to put fuses before the edis and coil, tbh, for testing i didn't, i just put it all together as quick as possible.
tbh, i didn't use fueses but you really should!
i didn't need a relay for my solenoind, or anything else, but thats dependant on the current your key switch can take, and the current to the solenoid (which is essentially a relay anyway)

i didn'y use a switch, just a toggle switch for ignition, and i have got a starter button i used for the solenoid, but on the last one, i just touched the wire to the battery, as seen here

I have and edis module but no coil pack yet

Would any ford one suit? I want it to run the cvh then a zetec after.

that looks the same as mine, so should be alright.
there should be a plug with 3 pins on it to connect, also thats the push on type, which is good. there was a clip on type for the HT leads, but you MIGHT struggle to get the right plug leads to fit it and the zetec later if its clip on, but that coil pack looks good to me

Cheers fella,

With the lamp for oil pressure, whats needed for that? might be a daft question!!
Doe the pressure sender resistance just go high enough it kills a lamp?

Cheers

thats basically how mine works. the body of the switch earths tot he engine block, so you connect a lamp, any lamp really (i used a normal bulb indicator, which has melted itself, so watch for that...) 12v+ on one side (from ignition switch for example, so it somes on when the edis and coil is powered) 12v+ -> ignition switch -> lamp -> pressure switch in the block

when pressures up, light goes off

cool with give it ago.
Need to sort the electrics first this month and then get the carbs and manifold next month.
hate being on a build budget! but I guess its part of the fun!
