tips on servicing a starter motor (4age)
my starter is playing up. it just clicks and even with a jump car wired on aswell it requires a goof few taps with a drift to get it turning. problem
being that following reserach the BT 4age starter is different to others and will be hard to source in this country. the jump car rules out bad
battey
ry.
im going to dismantle it and have a look, clean it up and hopefully fix it. i recon its not well due to being left for 5 months outside! it does not
like the love hat relationship we have!! im hoping to find browning points or dirty contacts.
Any tips or just get stuck in?

What's a "love hat"? Is it like a "Kiss me Quick" hat?
If you do strip it it's probablly caused by burnt contacts in the solenoid (probably started by verdigree on the copper contacts). To be honest
it's not usually worth the effort (labour cost) to strip them anymore; If we do get them working they often fail again soon after. We just fit a
recon' unit but it's worth a try for you if it's easy to get at and you have the time.

Not sure if its similar to the 3sgte starter but I had the same symptoms in mine about 7 years ago. Stripped, cleaned everything with carb cleaner
then regreased and rebuilt with no parts replaced and it has been fine ever since. Brushes still had lots of life but the grease in it had dried up.
Simple bits of hardware so no it should be pretty obvious when you strip it.

a good memory and a good soldering gun......
i used to replace my starter on my pinto once or twice a year until one time i could not get one quickly enough so i stripped it myself and found that
water was getting into the solenoid and causing corrosion on the contacts. a quick dremmel and some instant gasket and the motor has been through
three winters of daily driving without trouble, cost only a couple of hours effort.
