finding what wire from where

hi guys ,in process of wiring new dials into dash board ,is there a way to find out which wire from what or is it justa case of trial and error ,seems more error at moment

when in doubt - - - - multimeter.

Use a test lamp connected to a 9v battery - no damage when you short something out

mainley trying to find dash lamp power instructions say one wire to chassis other to dash lamp power ,i have had lights on when turning ignition on but not when turning lights on ?the chassis wire is deffinately right as can trace to bolting point on chassis ? i also need neg side of coil for tacho is there best way to find ?

If you cant be sure which wire goes to coil then easest to run your own wire direct.
