V8 starter motor wiring

slightly off topic, having just done a V8 engine transplant, we seem to have forgotten how to connect the starter motor up. Large cable plus smaller ones.

Any suggestions. PS, it wasn't me that disconnected them in the first place

from memory the potential confusion is that there are 2 small connections. One of them (the spade ??) is to bypass the ballast resistor for starting - you can probably ignore it & just wire the start switch to the other.

Hi,
I don't have details in front of me but I can tell you that the RV8 uses an auxiliary relay to drive the starter solenoid. I wouldn't try driving the solenoid directly from the key or it might burn out the switch.

IIRC, it's not just the ballast bypass that is fed by the solenoid but on the Rover SD1 it also feeds the fuel pump via the oil pressure switch. This is to ensure that the engine will stop unless there is oil pressure or you are cranking the engine.

So, one of the small connections is the solenoid energising input and the other is connected to the starter coil so it only gets battery voltage when the solenoid has engaged.

HTH,
Craig.

most likley,

you will have 2 spades 1 for start 1 for balast bypass.

if you are running points and balast resistor you need to get it right, if you are on electronic points you should be ok.
