Wideband air/fuel ratio gauges

Hope this is in the right section!

Just started looking into wideband gauges for setting up my turbocharged carbed R1 motor.

Have found the innovate motorsport, ngk, and a few others on Ebay seem to be cheaper from the USA!

Anybody know about what percentage import tax I would be looking at? And do they rip you of with tax on the postage as well?

I would be gratefull for peoples opinions / experiences as I know nothing about them apart from what I have recently read any advice would be gratefully received!

I managed to get one for £210 delivered instead of the £290 over here.
The seller put "sample" on the postal sticker.

Was thinking of asking them the same thing when I've made the decision of which one to get.

I must admit I do like the look of the innovate XD-16 gauge but the NGK is a lot cheaper

Have been looking at the same thing myself!

Shame wideband is so expensive - would be good to try and get a group buy maybe?

innovate works well i rigged it up to my tl to see how it fuels under load and it seems pretty accurate . the only comparison i can make is with my sun emmisions machine which gave the same lambda readings as the innovate at idle and fast idle but obviously not under load

I'm heading towards the innovate but don't really need all its features,

Would be nice to know how the cheaper units perform in comparison!

Has anybody use the NGK ect?

Are you planning to use it a lot? For my first seven I found a garage that was willing to let me use their analyser. Had to stay on their premises but it costs me only a crate of beer...

I've recently bought a Innovate LC-1 from the USA. Came to around £103 delivered.

Worst case you'll get hit for 4% duty and 17.5% VAT (possibly also for an admin charge of ~£12 depending on who delivers it, but only possible if you get hit for duty/vat).

Even if you get hit for all 3, it works out cheaper than from the UK.

Easy to get stuff from the US without getting hit as long as the seller puts notes it as a gift of sub $40, or a sample of no commercial value, etc etc.

Got a new exhaust manifold from the US this week for the focus. Was £170 delivered, in the UK it would have been an easy £350 for a mild steel version.

the only problem with that is you can only tell whats happening without load on the engine .for what it does and just for being able to save a turbo engine from cooking itself its a bargain. the v3 msns uses a wideband lambda so perhaps some clever person can take enough electricery from the ms to create a locost wideband reader as ms comes in component form how much would you need just to build a reader,i have no idea hance i bought one ready made

MS doesn't drive a wideband sensor itself though, it still needs an external controller to interface. There was a DIY-WBO2 project on the go a while back, but it used a hideously expensive (~200 squids) sensor and the boards aren't available any more either, although you could probably make your own if you're the kind of person that likes to do everything the hard way.

Techedge do DIY wideband kits and gauges that work out pretty cheap in proper money, but as has already been mentioned with the p1ss poor dollar at the moment you can't go far wrong ordering anything from the US

If you want to source one in the UK, I don't know of a cheaper source than Bill Shurvinton

bill at shurvinton.fsworld.co.uk

If you drop him a line with your requirements then I'm sure he'll suggest something suitable (Innovate etc)

I think there's already a couple of kits floating around. Don't think they cost much less than a complete LC-1 though when you factor in the cost of the sensor on top.

According to Dave Walkers book on engine management it's possible to use a multimeter connected to a lambda sensor to read mixture . Not sure if he mean a wide band or not ?

Certainly will work on a narrowband. Will fluctuate between 0v and 1v.

Good url for info.

Can i just ask a thicko question?

If you already have a AFR gauge and want a wideband sensor and controller, does this mean, for example, if you go on innovate site you only need to buy the LC-1?

http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/lc1.php

$199?

If so this is far cheaper than i originally assumed they were.

Cheers,
Darren.
