How are you connecting it to the laptop, are you using a usb to serial convertor. Are you sure the serial cable is staright through and not a null modem cable which look similar but are wired differently.

A bit more info required I think is needed.

Have you checked in the system properties that the USB-Serial converter is using COM1?

Sometimes it just picks a free COM port that isisn't being used already, certainly the old versions of Megajolt never recognised other ports being used, not sure if newer versions do.

Hi Rob
You need to configure the usb converter to a serial port in the comms menu for megajolt and also on your PC, i cant remember the full details of the PC options but had the same problem with someone else using a USB adaptor and it was the PC end that didnt match the serial port selected in the megajolt menu.

Tranna do this from memory because i've got vista now,

Basically you've got to get into Device Manager (used to tbe right click on MyComputer and then properties)

Then scroll down to "Ports (COM&LPT)"

The USB adapter should be in there, right click on that and properties..

Then in the window that pops up there should be a tab "port settings"
Then in the advanced button on that there should be the option to select which COM Port it uses.

Hope you can follow that

Yes mate it goes upto 10, Tools > Configurator Options and drop down to choose your com port, with those usb leads it can differ each time you plug it it as well.

You may want to try the latest version then, depending on the firmware you have on your megajolt that may need doing as well.

If it was me I would be getting the latest version of software, ensuring the com port in windows matches the megajolt(ie let windows sort itself out the make mj match that instead of trying to force it the other way round) If it still won't communicate try doing the firmware as this doesn't use that software it uses the firmware tool.

The megajolt is powered up isn't it! the isolator switch isn't off is it

Just thought I'd check!!! Hope you're not offended!!

Rich

I've got the version 3 software running on a approx 3 years old Megajolt (it was originally the old Java based tuning software)

You might need to re-start the computer before the USB adapter properly uses the COM1, if something was already using it the computer will prob need re-starting.

Hi Rob
It is some time since i supplied the megajolt, so am assuming it may have early firmware and tuning software loaded .
You need to go to the megajolt site and find the instructions on upgrading firmware, and then download the latest firmware and configaration software as it is much better than the old version and has more facilitys.
Check it out and get back to me if you have any questions about the firmware upgrade.

You will need to get the usb port set to talk to the megajolt first, it is possible as I had the same problem with one i was setting up for someone else with the early software he worked in IT and still had problems but we did get it to work, other option is do you have access to a Pc with a serial port on it? this would be the best option as USB converters did cause problems on early versions but once the firmware is updated then it will solve that problem.
You need to make sure that nothing else is using the com port selected, ie no pda software or modem etc.
Paul.

If you get really stuck you could post it back to me and i will upgrade the firmware, but it may be better to persevere and sort out how to do it as postage would be about £5 each way by special delivery.I could do it to return next day so will be 3 or 4 days to sort it.
Paul.
