Tintop Audi oil light

I have an old 2l Audi A6 (1995, like the audi 100)
A few days ago, the dasboard "computer" started displaying the low oil pressure warning symbol after about 10 mins of running.
To see if there was oil being pumped, I removed the sensor - loads of oil went everywhere. I also used a multimeter to verify that the pressure sensor switch (just sbove the oil filter) closed just after the angine started.
This leads me to believe that the problem is in the dasboard instrument module - I have heard that this is a common problem. Any idea how I can fix this or at least stop the oil warning symbol?

Do an oil pressure test to start with, if OK then try a new switch .

I have tested the switch with a multimeter - it switches on just after the engine starts presumably due to oil pressure.
