Couple of modern(ish) electronics questions

Im transfering the electronics from my new engine to the one in the locost and have a couple of questions.

The new distributor doesnt have any points (when you open it, there is just the rotor). How do i insert it into the engine and get it in the right position?
Do these types of distributor just use a normal coil?

Depends on how the timing is set. Usually put cylinder 1 at 10 degree BTDC on compression stroke and align the rotor so that it points to the cap contact for the lead going to cylinder 1. You then need to rotate the body to set the timing; this is done by connecting a small bulb instead of the coil and finding the position when it goes out. Depending on the engine, some distributors cannot be adjusted like this but a put in a fixed position, Ford mk3? Escort springs to mind.

It is hard to say but generally points type would use a 3 ohm coil, electronic ignition and ballast resistor systems use a 1.5 ohm coil. Modern EFI will use a coil pack; dunno what the resistance of those is.
