Very hot +ve

Is it normal that my +ve terminal on the batery gets too hot to touch when turning over?

hmm.. NO!

Either you have a dodgy battery.... a poor contact between cable and terminal on the battery (IE corrosion), or your +ve cable is too small!!

sounds like its a dirty connection causing a bit of arcing and hence heat. I wouldn't expect it to get too hot to touch.

Well the battery is a couple of months old but hardly used but none of the wires seem hot.

If the ECU is supposed to operate the starter solenoid (but is not connected) and i have a separate wire to operate the solenoid, would that do it (maybe there is twice the power going to it?)

Clean and lube afterwards!

I doubt it, even with the ecu connected and working, it has to get the power to operate the solenoid from the battery anyway.

Give the connection a thorough clean and make sure its nice and tight.

how is the wire attached to the lead terminal and how is the lead terminal atached to the battery temrinal?

you have a spot of high resistance, it doesn';t need to be much, an ohm or so but with the 100s of Amp going through it when turning over, it is gonna get hot.

check the crimp on the lead/terminal interface - you haven't sodlered it on perchance?

then clean the battery temrinal and lead terminal with 600 wet n dry umntil they are shiney, connect and tighten.

if fault perissts, then it could be a fault in the battery mind.....

No it's not normal. Heat = resistance. Shouldn't be much of that at the terminal. Clean and lube!

If the terminal on the battery only is getting hot its the terminal.

If the cable is getting hot along its full length the cable cross sectional area is too small and you need to increase the size.

Either resistance or excessive load would cause a high temperature, but i wouldne expect to see a hotspot on a battery terminal at all unless there was a continuity issue through corrosion etc.

Disconnect the terminal, clean and reconnect. You dont need lube at all, but you can get terminal grease to cover once youve fitted, to prevent corrosion in the future.

Check the starting current. Your starter motor may be breaking down / crudded up, or there might be heavy resistance against it??

Check your earth as well. particularly on the starter.
