I have to admit, having had the whole thing go without a hitch from start to finish i proberbly not the person to advise.
- However, to start, are you useing a laptop with a com port (i was) or with a usb adapter.

Check you are trying it on the correct port?

Try all the ports listed and see if any work.

Alternatively you can see in control panel [assuming it is XP] which port is being used.

On the autolabs site theres a java application you may need to install to make it work. Mine needed it.

Is your Com port set as port 1 ? My GEMs unit isnt recognised unless the port is set to port 1.

can't add much to the com port problem apart from trying another usb converter. i have 3 which will work first time on one computer and not at all on another. ?

with the TPS i took it of the carbs and on to the bench and connected a small 9v battery to the two outer pins and read the volts on the centre one.
the signal pin should have a rising voltage when the throttle is opened.
turned the outer connections around till correct.
what was + bat = vref
- = ground
signal = TPS input.

This happens to me offten as i use an RS232 to usb adaptor, Megajolt tuning prog only uses COM ports 1 to 10, some times the adaptor appears on a higher number.
If i can,t connect i go to control panel, device manager, check the COM port the usb adaptor is attached to and set the Megajolt tune to look at that port, this usually works.
Sometimes the usb adaptor is on a port higher than 10, usually because the computer still has COM ports allocated from other times i connected the usb adaptor of other devices. I then carefully dlete the device from COM port 1 to 10, making sure not to delete a computer specific device.
This all sounds more complicated than it is, and if i can do it you can.

The problem is, as others have said, between your PC and the megajolt.

Sounds daft, I know, but I get the same error when I start the software without a 12v feed to the megajolt. I'd check that first, then try another port.
