Insurance for registration ?
Up to now I am happy with the order of things I need to do and I am off for my IVA on Thursday but after doing a bit of digging around I am unsure on
on thing. Do I need insurance to get my registration from DVLA ? , surely I need to know the reg number before I get my insurance.
This is what I found on the DVLA site
What you need to do to register
You will need to apply to register and licence the vehicle at a DVLA local office. The application form V55/4 or V55/5 should be accompanied by the
following documentation:
•appropriate identity documents confirming your name and address (as listed above)
•a current certificate of motor insurance
•the cost of the vehicle licence excise duty (car tax)
Can anybody clarify the process

Just call the insurance company and ask them to insure it on the vin number, might help if you use a specialist kitcar insurer so they know what you
mean, it`s really straightforward to do & they will change it to a reg number when you get one after IVA etc.
You will probably find there is a time limit on it though, probably a month.

I would rather just get my registration and leave on sorn till ready to tax and use it

You only need insurance to tax it I guess, so it can be IVA`d OK, but if you want a reg number then I believe you will have to tax it too, hence the
insurance. I suppose the answer is to leave the car untaxed and without a reg until you intend to use it, a bit like a new car in a showroom is. I
think the easiest way is to just do it all together and avoid any problems when you want to use it. Insurance is often less than £100 but when I did
mine they said it was non refundable and couldn`t be cancelled.
The DVLA inspection is often a bit awkward and different areas of the country are different again.
The inspectors don`t really know what they are doing unless they have seen a few kitcars before, I wanted mine done and out the way as quick as
possible!

I had an initial problem with my insurance through Flux. They originally offered an agreed value policy that covered a month only, but I had to retake
SVA, so it expired. I then took out a different policy with no agreed value and they were happy to insure for a full year on the chassis number alone.
Once I'd passed my retest, I got the policy changed to the reg number.
AFAIK you cannot register a vehicle without taxing it, so you need valid insurance, but you don't need insurance for IVA unless you want to
drive it there.

I was insured fire and theft only (just in case) during the last few months of building. I didn't insure it to drive until the day of
registration - and, as others have said - the inurance is only needed to tax it.
If you insure it before IVA on the VIN, you will set yourself a time limit to get it retested (don't wish to put a voodoo on it but 95% fail
first time). Driving insurance on a VIN is limited to 30 days.
But - what's this? "I'm going to SORN it at first!" come on - you are going to want to get it out for a blat ASAP
aren't you?
You've not spent 18 years building an ORNAMENT.......

you DEFINATLY need your car to be insured for it to be registered and it has to be the orignal certificate you give them not a cover note or faxed
copy or they will just refuse

Are you driving to the IVA? If yes, then you need insurance for that because you'll be on the road.

Just to clarify...
You can insure you car on it's VIN. This will only be accepted for a limited period (usually 4 weeks) before you must give them a reg'
number.
To drive to IVA you will need insurance.
Once you pass IVA the car needs to be insured to apply to DVLA for registration, as you have to tax the car (for12 months) at the same time.
It's not posible to register and go direct to SORN (why would you?).
If you fail IVA and have to go through a retest or the registration gets delayed, you can request an extention to your 4 week VIN insurance deadline.
If the 4 weeks runs out without you informing them of a reg or requeting an extention then the insurance will be void... and the fee non-returnable!

Just to be different, although maybe things have changed by now. Mine didn't get to the first SVA due to a carburettor problem, failed the
second on two minor points and passed third time, so I went over the month. I just called the broker and they issued another 30 day cover note on the
VIN.

I am trailering car to IVA so dont need insurance and have decided I will not risk having a 30 day time limit to get any fails sorted, after all I can
set up the insurance pretty quickly if it passes on Thursday.
So IVA Thursday and maybe registration early March.
