O/T? Rev counter showing 50%
Got an XR4x4 2.9 and the rev counter only seems to be registering about half the actual engine speed. Seems to be reving fine but according to the rev
counter only goes to just under 3000 rpm. Does anyone here happen to know how to cure this? Was thinking of replacing the rev counter but not sure if
this would cure the problem. All help welcomed.

there's probably a switch on the back and its set for a v8 not a 4 cylinder engine

Is it set to the wrong number of cylinders? Or to sequential instead of wasted spark? Does it have any adjustable settings for this kind of thing
(basically, pulses per revolution)?

Hiya mate is it running standard coil set up ? if using coil pack (wasted Spark) this can cause a problem I think I have a new rev counter knocking
around if you need one. if it is running coil packs you may need a couple of diodes
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

All 100% standard, on a dizzy and a coil, just as Ford intended, no switches to move or adjust. Was working fine then one day not.

That's what I thought but don't know if there something else it could be.

I remember hearing that the rev counter on some of these 2.9 run off the alternator.
Is this true on yours? if so maybe scoping the alternator output.

Make sure are the connection are good and not loose if you have a engine based mulitimeter then you can check at various points in the wiring to
check rpm but as said check all connections 1st even the earth
