ignition barrel

Hi

Just back from me hols and starting to get more bits sorted on the car. I have a sierra column and want to know if I can change the ignition barrel from the knackered one I have, which has the flat type of key, to a different one with the cylindrical type key?

Any advise welcome as seen a new barrel and key on e-bay for cheap money and just need to be sure it will fit.

Thanks

Andy

Nope the latter style tibbe barrel wil NOT fit the mk1 column.

The mk2 sierra column will take the barrel from any mondeo / escort / transit / ect of 1990's.

Or fit what ever barrel you want into the dash. Or anywhere in the car for that matter.

Does it need to be in the key, or merely within a certain distance of a receiver in the car? Either way, you could still bolt just about any barrel in regardless of what key it needs.

True, I did want the key to have the chip in so I had an immobiliser, but as you say, bolt in any barrel and have the chip on the key ring!!

How would I attach a mondeo barrel to a dash tho? Suppose I need to think about that one....!

Got a pic? If it's anything like the old barrels I'm used to, it'll probably be a two bolt mount, in which case you need to replicate that on the back of the dash so that it leaves the front of the barrel flush with the dash. The usual IVA radius stuff will apply though, so it may need to sit back slightly if it's a bit sharp.

It wont read the chip mounted in a key ring, Ive tried.

Best bet is to find a mk2 column and sell yours on. It will be much less hassle in the long run.

If you mount the key on the dash you will loose the steering lock. You then need the immobilizer for iva but he may not accept the ford Pats with out paper work. You will end up having to add yet another immobilizer.

I have a spare tibbe key and barrel you can pick up with the tps plug if you want to try and adapt it.

I got a new barrel with keys from a company that specialised in old Ford parts and advertised on ebay IIRC based in Kings Lynn? but I can't remember the name. Easy to fit when I got it
