Bearing in mind the amount that belts can 'flap' on overrun, I would think it is a bit too close chap
It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

You sure you're running the water pump in the correct direction?
I could swear mine runs the other way...
Is it too toasty on the other side to put the alternator there?
I want to change mine to exhaust side but water pump rotation is an issue.

its a bit close, but say an extra 5mm length on the belt should see the alternator push out enough to give clearance perhaps?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Come to think of it I'm not! Am I right or wrong?
Did want it on the other side but colum and exhaust stop that

I don't know what engine that is - I'm not up on my engine recognition. However, I have read about some engines that have two different
water pumps depending on the original installation and that they rotate opposite ways. Mondeo Zetecs having pumps replaced with Escort/Orion pumps,
due to differing belt paths that can be used.

Have you thought about running the belt a different route?
Would this work? New route in red, obviously can't see whether there are any obstructions between the crank and the top idler

Has the advantage that theer is more contact on the alternator.

Here's the standard routing in case it helps. Davie's suggested routing looks like pretty sensible for your setup.

But then the water pump will be running the other way. Was there a different type engine that used the same pump but running the other way?

Would you like a moment to re-consider this?
It's still going the same way because although the belt is on the opposite side of the water pump pulley it's being driven by the other
side of the crank pulley.
