Battery problems
I've been spending a bit of time prepping my 3 wheeler for MSVA and the battery is knackered. It was a new one only a couple of months ago. I
tried to find the drain but there doesn't seem to be one. What can be causing the problem?
When you key on, the battery drain is 5A. when you turn off and move the key, the battery drain is 0.5A for 12 seconds, then 2.5 mA after that. Not
enough to drain or kill a battery. Last week I disconnected the battery and charged it up to 12.5 V. A couple of days later it was down to 12 V,
which I though OK. Today I've checked it and it was 8.7V. This is disconnected self discharge. The trike has been in the garage but not run
much. would this kill e battery or is there another underlying problem do you think?

To properly determine if a battery is fully charged you have to measure after the battery has been rested for several hours (2hrs at least
ideally 12hrs).
For a standard lead acid battery After resting off charge 12.5 volts is about 85% charge 12.62 is 100% charge.
Some older battery chargers cannot fully charge some enhanced chemistry batteries because they require a higher charging voltage charge.
Having said all that it sounds like a knackered battery I think 2 of the cells in the battery are dead to test it without a volts drop
tester charge for 12 hours then rest the battery for at least an hour then do a cranking voltage test that is measure the battery voltage when
cranking the engine on the starter. If the cranking voltage falls rapidly to less than 10v the battery has a dead (shorted) cell.
