Sorting out a tachometer

What's a locost/scrapyard friendly way of rigging up a tachometer? I can't use the one that the donor engine (XUD) used as the flywheel (HDI) has a different number of teeth and the gearbox (Pilot) doesn't have a place to mount a sensor.

I've heard of running them off the alternator but that looks a bit complicated. Some kind of sensor on the crank pulley?

An old Peugeot turbo diesel has none of these things.

You can buy a converter to adapt a petrol engine tacho to a diesel as long as you alternator has the W terminal (or you are happy taking it apart and connecting a wire to the rectifier to get a single phase output).

You could ecven build a diesel tachometer from scratch.

Thanks for those links, Mike. I've remembered that I have a spare alternator in the garage that's the same as the one I'm using in my MK so i'll have a look inside that and see if it's suitable
