Speedo - engine change

Hi

After loosing my sump plug whilst out for a drive and destroying my 1999 cbr919 engine, i bought another off ebay but in the time i had could only get a 1997 engine.

my problem now is I have no speedo!

on the original engine the speedo ran from a sensor on the gearbox housing, the new engine doesnt have the tapping point for this sensor as i believe the speedo ran off the front wheel?

how am I able to get my speedo working without changing the instruments?

am i able to get the gearbox housing modified to take the sensor?

thanks for any help

Matt

You'd have to find out how the sensor worked and what it attached to (i.e. how many rpms to the mph it did). I'd have thought that machining into the gearbox housing would be hard/expensive. But you might be able to hook it up to a magnetic/hall effect sensor mounted on a propshaft or something, if that will run the instrument. All of the aftermarket ones seem to work that way, dunno about the originals though.
Then you'd "just" need to find a part that rotated at the same speed as the original bit inside the gearbox.
