Battery Box?
I think im going to be hiding my battery behind the dash under the scuttle now, so was wondering does it need to be in a sealed box or anything like
that as it is kind of in the passenger area now? Any thoughts appreciated thanks.

I wouldnt be a fan of putting a box full of acid in the passenger compartment if the car ends upside down in a crash......

It does seem an unlikely place to put a 'box of acid' but you wouldn't be the first to place it there, or the last.

I think the box full of acid would be the least of my worries if i were upside down I guess that means there arent any specific sva rules about it
then??

acessability will be a bit limited.
problems with jump starts
persuing the pessimistic mode - some batteries can explode if subjected to a short or overcharging....
battery may gas hydrogen into the car - not such a prob open top, but may be an issue if you make a soft top.
if it does vent, the gas can corrode enclosed spaces.
dont you have any space on the other side of the firewall?

I've lowered mine into the scuttle panel using a home made ali box, kinda the same idea as putting it in the footwell but with nice access.

Alternative is to use battery box, firmly fixed to floor.
Battery, 'racing type' or 'gel' battery, no maintainence, completely sealed.
Fix 'off the shelf' foot rest, so passengers feet are not resting on battery box.
Connect 'jump posts' scuttle side.
See my photo archive picture...'bonnet up'.
I will be changing battery position, because it does restrict passenger leg room (very tall navigator!)
But not scuttle arrangement.
Following another thread/post, I am putting a disclaimer on above, to say that this works for me, was approved at SVA, but I dont know anyone elses
capabilities/limitations.

how does that gain you anything? are you mounting something above the battery?

I was working on the theory it's diffrent and tidies up the scuttle panel.
In the extreme it might even lower the centre of gravity by a whole 5mm

i think you gain in two areas, lower centre of gravity and looks neat!

Neatness is the only reason i really want to hide mine in the scuttle. passenger foot well was the only other option i could think of but thats still
in the "cockpit" area any way so has the same draw backs aswell as being in the passengers way. Hadnt thought about the gas discharge,
think what ill do now is seal it in a box, which vents through the scuttle into the engine bay, and worry about jump starting later Thanks for the
advice.

I've put the box of volts in the boot behind the passenger seat.
Any weight that can be persuaded over the back wheels has to be a good thing.
I've also got a couple of 25kg stainless steel billets that might get strapped over the diff as ballast.
How tail-happy is the Pinto-Indy in the wet?

I remember Conrod turning up to a meet with holes in his shoes where the battery had leaked and run down into his footwell!
Mine's currently in passenger footwell and I was going to build a box around it but better still would be other side of the bulkhead. Will have
to see if there's room!
I also want if low to help the CoG! That battery is bloody heavy!
