Wrong Type 9
Hi All
I have the wrong type Type 9 gearbox for my Striker - I need the longer input shaft version to work with my Caterham bellhousing and K series. I was
planning on using the Type 9 as is but that doesn't now seem to be an option.
I'm trying to make up my mind on what to do! Any thoughts on the following options -
1. Swap the input shafts (I have no idea if this is possible and the last time I delved into a gearbox it wasn't a pleasant experience!).
2. Find a second hand long input shaft box (Capri , XR4?)
3. Buy an uprated box with longer shaft (an uprated box was part of a longer term plan).
4. Sell the Dave Andrews built short stroke 1400 K series and go BEC :-)
Any views appreciated!

Option 5. Speak to Steve Perks in Redditch. 01527 894232. He will sort out your existing gearbox with a long input shaft and for a small extra sum fit
a better first gear. All for a fraction of the cost of a BGH or similar.

What about the RX8 option that the classic ford boys seem to be using at the moment, forget 1st gear and you then have a close ration 5 speed box.
Just needs an adaptor plate, input shaft spline and spigot bearing are ford compatible.

I did think of that but the tunnel is too small for it I believe.

It'd be a shame to give up on the K-series but... "Go BEC" is always the correct answer.
I'd have sworn Scootz had one when he said that.

Sierra V6 engined cars have the long input Type 9
Ratios are better
V6. Straight 4
1st 3.36. 3.6
2nd 1.81. 1.97
3rd 1.26. 1.36
4th. 1. 1
5th 0.85. 0.87

Lots of pics and comparisons with type 9 in this thread if you need to check sizes.

Both the 4 cylinder and V6 box have a 0.82 5th as standard. The 0.85 and 0.87 are the ratio's you get form BGH, Quaiffe and others.

I will hopefuly be doing this match up of engine and gearbox soon including caterham bellhousing, although I am seriously looking at rx8 box probably
5 speed as it seems to have more useable 1st gear over the more expensive 6 speed.
Can a adaptor not be machined up to fit on the end of the shaft and welded on.

Is the five speed similar to the six? Does it have the same splines etc to match up with the Ford clutch?

Wyn, the input shaft can be changed, had similar done for my K series installation. Would have loved your engine bought a 1.8 few months ago.
I will change the ratio whilst you are at it though. I bought a locost with a standard type 9, I have to say after years of having either a straight
cut close ratio and the 6 speed gearbox, the standard box feels really odd and sluggish

Thanks Femi
I'd love to go for a proper competition 'box but can't justify it right now!
I've just bought an RX8 gearbox to see if it'll fit in the tunnel - I don't think it will but I'll give it a go just to
satisfy my curiosity!

Hey Wyn, sorry can't help with your query but out of interest how wide is your transmission tunnel? Is it similar locost book chassis? I am
looking at a different gearbox due to a problem with my ae86 t50 box.
Thanks Rob

Hi Rob
Sorry for the delay in replying - we've just got back from holidays.
The box is way too big! The tunnel on the Striker is tiny and the box is over an inch wider at a point just in front of the gear lever. I can take
some measurements if you want. You're more than welcome to borrow the Mazda gearbox to try in your Luego.
Regards
Wyn
