The short answer is you can not.

The ford alternator of that age has what ford called “smart charge” this is where the ecu controls the alternator cutting charge at crytical times to reduce load and there for emissions. It is not a simple switched signal.

The alternator will self excite if you remove the three pin plug but it has no way of putting the light out on the dash. This is again information sent to the dash from the ecu.

The silvertop alternator I am told will bolt in place and is a traditional unit.

If on the other hand you are using the focus ecu have a look as the PIN numbers are on here.

Looks like I've just fitted a type 6 to the ST170 engine in the Quantum. It came with the main cable connected to W, so that's how I connected it into the car. I haven't started it yet but it hasn't got an ign light on dash. Maybe I just need to move that across to B+ and see if that sorts it.

It won't work on W, that's normally used for original equipment rev counters.

Hi Warren - in that case the ST 170 alternator - not connected except for the power lead - will self excite and self regulate? Or will it self exite and overcharge?
I'm thinking it may be simpler to just pull the plug as it were.
Sorry if this is a dumb question
Ian
