DIY WIRING

I am in the process of starting our wiring loom for 2 litre pinto with book chassis, using the sierra column as a base. We want to do the wiring ourselfs for the cheapness and achievement. I have refered to Rons book diagram and found very few relays used. I have already laid out the wires from the fuse box ( 8 way ) got some relays from Premier Wiring and am wondering which circuits I should include the relays in. Is there a more accurate diagram rather than Rons book one available.I have heard of the Luego steering coloum relay set, but not sure what these are to serve and would rather do it ourself. PS, HOW DO I PUT A PICTIURE WITH MY NAME ?

I'm at the same stage Richard. With you on the diy bit.
Apart from using a Nova column, I'm scratching my head the same as you.

My 'pooter wouldn't let me download your
file Chris. My virus thingy said it had been corrupted.

diy wiring

I have also just tried to download the file and while it was trying to open said that a prob had been encountered so would not complete. I have just returned from Detlin and spoken to Luego and they said that they use 4 relays mainly for lights. I was hoping for ideas form the post.

I had it saying it was corrupt have you saved it first then opened it i found that got round the problem

Treat each part of the wiring as a separate circuit, ie the loom is lots of individual circuits with all the circuits bundled together and in one sheath..

That makes it easier. Work on the ones you can identify, LABEL EVERTHING.
Then you work through it all.

If you have a Loom label it on the kitchen table, and check wires from point to point with a test meter, and LABEL UP.

This way you read the daigram several times over, and begin to learn whats what.
Also its much easier on a table than fitted to the vehicle.
This is time well spent. Believe me, I have been through this several times (with Land Rovers!).

I have been on BT for 36 years, and am used to dealing with thousands of wires (I am an "Old School" Trained Wirer) and this is the easiest way, and you learn what they are for... and makes the actual installation easier.

DONT FORGET the earths. and make the to BARE metal.
Battery Earth to Chassis, and a Thick lead from Chassis to the engine.
You DO NOT want 300 Amps when starting flowing up the throttle cable past all that Petrol DO YOU

buy a Decent set of RATCHET crimpers for about £15-20, expensive, but will make proper connections. Those stupis pliers that come with some kits are useless, as they make a low pressure joint, that as soon as it gets damp will give problems in years to come.
I have a new set of those, anyone want them, can have it free. Just retrieve them from my wheely bin

I used Blue Beehive for connectors, very good and quick. I bought them in bags of 100, and still use them. Cheap as well.

Cheers wilkingj, I have done a fair bit of wiring on bangers before,but always seem to go over the top and want to do what is necessary this time. I do not want to over complicate it but also want to have seperate supplies to each dip or main beam so that if a fuse goes I am not left without any decent front lights. I may have one wire form coloum switch and split at relays. What circuits would you recomment we have relays in, not just the front lights ?

I would relay the headlights main and dip on two 5 pin changeover relays one per side. Also the fan ,fuel pump if electric, and as a general rule anyrthing else over 10 amps. This means you need a whole bank of relays for
Heated window
Electric windows
Heated seats
Electric sunroof
abs brakes
asr system

You can also get a double pole relay with one 30 and two 87s which you could wire with one feed and then fuse the 2 outputs one to each headlight. Ideally one with one input and a pair of NC and NO contacts would be ideal but i don't know if they exist.

That's a good way to sum it up, anything over 10 amps.

On mine, there will be very few relays. I am using an Opel Manta steering column (similar to the nova one mentioned but with a single "old fashioned looking" stick on it!)

I am going to use the stalk twist function (normally for wipers) for turning the side/headlights on, probably via a relay (but the manta doesn't use relays for any lights, including headlights, and it has halogen bulbs!)

The wash button on the end of the stick will operate the horn.
