Ford engine number not recognised
I sent a letter to Ford stating my Pinto engine number which is correct (as far as i know) and they replied saying that the number is not recognised
as a Ford engine number. According to another website the 1st 2 letters which are UA state it's a 1978 engine.
Is there another site which would confirm age and will this affect the emissions test if i can't proove engine age.
I have changed the engine number on the log book so that may help.

Try the burton power catalogue. They have a full listing of numbers and ages. IIRC my dad used this as proof for his x-flow.
If you cant prove age then this has a big affect on emissions. I think they can apply the latest levels to the test which you do not want. Other
option is to prove when x-flows stopped being made / installed.

It's a pinto. I'm hoping that it should only need a simple emissions test due to the pinto ending production before 94.

You're not confusing the block number with the engine number, are you?
The block number is cast into the side - for the x-flow it would be "711 AB..." or similar. This doesn't change over many years.
The engine number is stamped into the block, usually by hand, usually on a lug or flat surface. Generally it's badly stamped and very uneven!
This number may get lost if the engine has ever been rebored.

I was told by the SVA centre that even though they didnt make any pintos after 94 they were still fitted in some transits after that, not sure if
thats this country or another. That is why they needed proof.
You would have thought they would have all the engine codes, like the list in the Burton Power catalogue, then they could just go by the list. There
is no difference between a letter from Ford and checking the engine code from a list really.

Sorry Donut, i dont know why i said xflow. Defo worth a look in Burton Power. my pinto was listed in that - ford letter just confirmed it. Mine is
June 87 = 3.5%. If yours is pre 86 you might get 4.5%........ which is nice.
I sailed thro emissions check even with 285 cam, big exhaust and 38 DGAS. I confess to having a fiddle during test but it set up nice.

In fact i'm sure its on the web somewhere,may even be in the links.

Have you got the reg of the donor? a DVLA printout should confirm. I just showed the V5 from the donor at my SVA, these guys are not daft, if its a
pinto it is old enough, they know you havent got it from a maltese import brought bact to UK by a late model pinto collecter

I bought the engine from MAC#1 so no V5. I have changed the engine number on the V5 that i have for the car that donated the rest of the running gear
so i will be able to take a V5 to SVA with the Indy's engine number that matches the V5.... if you see what i mean!

I don't have the V5 for the car that the engine came out of. I have a V5 for a different sierra that donated the running gear.
With the engine i only have the engine number.

I'm having exactly the same problem as you. I am using a 78/79 pinto from a 2.0s Capri, the number starts with WT.
I have no V5 for the original Capri and have changed the Sierra V5 to the pinto so I can have the Sierra reg. Does any of that make sense?
Please let me know how you get on so I can have the full 4.5 co test too.

I suggest you get hold of a Burton Power catalogue which should have a chart with details of your engine build date.

Mines definitly a 79 Pinto and I was 5 years old when it was made!

While fitting the engine into my car i noticed the date is stamped on the side of the Engine (D'oh!) Problem solved!
