Battery not working (but making worrying noise)

I've been trying to sort out a few problems with my phoenix this evening, and all seemed to be going alright. (indicators were funny, made the earth a bit better and it solved it, alternator not working, noticed the bracket wasn't actually bolted to the engine block, which can't have helped!)

Anyway, just went out to have a bit more of a fiddle, and nothing turns on. Slightly more worryingly, there's a fizzing noise coming from the positive terminal of the battery, and a bit of smokey type stuff (quite possibly smoke) coming off.

What's happened? How do I fix it? I thought I was getting somewhere!!!

Thanks

Sam

are you sure if its coming from the pos terminal and not from inside the battery vent.
clean up the post if its fizzling sonds like a bad connectin to me.
if its coming out the battery vents have you checked the levels acid should be covering all the plates

It shouldnt be doing this if nothings switched on, there no draw on the battery.

Is something wired up to wrong way?

Disconnect both terminals and leave the battery alone for a while. If you still get the "fizzing" it could be an internal short in the battery. Not unheard of. If that is the case then replacement is the only option.

If the fizzing is comming from the post it is just a dirty loose connection. Take it off wash it down with warm water, clean with sand paper and refit tightening it properly.

It it returns its ist likely either the battery is getting over charged or there is a leak in the battery top cover where the post comes through.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Went out this morning to check it, and it had decided to fix itself overnight! It does seem likely that it was a loose connection, so will clean it all up anyway.

I can cope with my car breaking/fixing when something is happening to it, but when it does it by itself, sat in the comfort of a garage, it's a little confusing!!!
