Plug connectors for dashboard
Hi all,
I want to be able to make up and wire the dashboard on the bench, then pop it in place and just plug it into the loom - obviously this will need
either one big plug connector or a few smaller ones - thing is I've tried looking in the usual places (RS, Maplin etc) and can't find
anything suitable.
Has anyone done it - and if so what with??

I used a 15 way from http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/VWPweb2000/multicon/multicon.html
You'll find similar on RS if you search under Molex.

I used these too. Very good, and pretty cheap. Company is good to deal with too.

We used these from RS, available in different number of ways
Tyco/Amp Mate_N_Lok connectors.
You can use either plug or socket crimps in either fixed or free end, its normal to have a socket on the 'live' side.
Here's some RS typical stock numbers:-
Panel Fixed Housing
3020350, this 3 way
Cable Housing
3020271, this is 3 way
Housing are available in 3, 6, 9, 12, & 15 ways
Crimps
2742223, this a 26/22AWG pin
Crimps are available as pins and sockets, 26/22 AWG & 22/18 AWG. Combinations of pins & sockets can be fitted to both types of housing.

We used a SCART connector used for TV's and Video's etc.
Plenty of pins in them, cheep and easily available

I have been going through this exercise today myself, I asked at my local Halfords and was told they have nowt like that but the guy went round the
back and and came back with a ten way plug which the audio fitter had thown in the bin, this will do for one of the leads and I can get another from
my local car radio shop.

interesting idea; gold plated too!!! but beware that audio/video signals are very low current so the contacts and wiring is not ideal for larger
currents.

Car radio ISO connecters are good but they arnt cheap.

PC ATX connectors are cheap and give you 20 way connection.., and are available in male and female inline from Maplin and RS. About 99p each i think.
They will take a very high current as well.

These are good value from Maplins and ideal for dash connections.RS also sell them as Molex minifit connectors but the connection pins have to be
bought by the hundred so not any good for small quantitys.I actually buy the female connectors from Maplins just for the pins for Megajolt connectors
as it is the cheapest way to buy them.

Im also at this point i bought some mate & lock plastic connectors which look great and go up to 16 way i think maybe more but the problem i found
is that there a bitch to seperate and because my wirings gonna be fairly hidden behind the dash i need it to be fairly easy to seperate.
I was thinking of this kind of thing for my digidash connections :

sorry above link does work but basically there the D-TYPe connections
but still need to think of something for my dashboard switches which will have the light switches and starter switches on it.
