Wiring loom update

well the loom is in the car, and I can currnetly make the sidelights work.

That is it, nothing else.

starting at the begining, the car came with a loom, but I'm unclear as to whose it is, and all I wanted to do was go from dash mouthed light and indicator controls to coloumn mounted sierra stalks.

Simple enough you would think, but not for me, I can't seem to find any for of switched control for the headlights? only marked in diagrams is side lights? (so that makes loads of sense then) I seem to have two indicator flasher units? (one is aparrently a super winker, the other a silver box, both with only two connections, and for the headlights instead of two 4 pin relays, i seem to have 1 x 5 pin)

I've just about had it and it won't be long before the whole lot is for sale. (probably not before anyone asks)

I've looked in the book, and a vickygreen loom diagram (which seems very similar in colours to my loom) but i'm convinced there are mistakes in the diagram.

I've now spent the best part of 2 solid days trying to work this out.

goin o have another go now. have fun

Is one of the flasher units for the hazards?

nib,

Obviously can't comment on the loom as I've no idea whose it is but the relay with 5 pins is probably a changeover relay to switch between main and dip beam, this link might help :- http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/VWPweb2000/relays/relays.html

Don't get too disheartend, wiring a car is not easy especially when you haven't done it before and even more especially when someone else has had a go first!!

Start with each circuit individually and get each component to work on it's own even if you just make up a temp circuit using a 6v battery just to check things out.

A multimeter is a great asset, make sure you get one that has a continuity tester on it, this will be invaluable as itr basically tells you that one end of a wire is connected to the other, so even when switching you can use it to find out which wire is connected.

Here's my diagram which might help as it basically shows the wiring on my car, it won't be the same but it might give you an idea.

http://www.dewweb.co.uk/indyblade/images/Indyblade_wiring_v17.pdf

Essentially each circuit goes from power to swith to component and back to the chassis (earth).

Good luck and if ou need any help drop me a U2U and will try to help as much as I can.

Rich.

hello again,

many thanks for the words of encouragement, I sure I will get there, I'm convinced the relay circuit will work, but I'm still confused about the sierra light switch, I can see how it turns on the side lights (and I can ) but I can can see no connection for the main lights, yet the switch has three positions?

any explanations
?

many thanks all

Have you got both sides of the Sierra switchgear? I know it's been covered loads of times and is well documented in this section but you need to know which type of switches you have. The later ones carry the earth from the relays and don't handle power well at all. Have you got the earth connection between the two sides as the main lights will not work without this. It's a brown and black between the 56 terminals on my setup and earths the dip relay when it's switched.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hi

I do hae the later switches, (same colour coding as in RAZMAN's photo archive, and the earths are connected, but I'm confused there is no connection on the light side to the head lights, so how do they get turned on

I had/have the same issue with my car, part built by somebody else and naturally they didn't follow the instructions properly!

KitCarWorkshop are only 5 minutes from you, may be worth dropping in a seeing if any of the guys there will take some time out in a lunch break for some beer tokens.

Lots of experience there and I'm sure they could shed some light (no pun intended).

Seems their website is down currently, but same place/people as http://www.fishersportscars.co.uk/

You've made a start and at least something is working. It's a pity your not closer as I'd have a look for you. Keep going you'll get there yet.

so how do they get turned on

The power is already fed to the dip relay and the relay earth is connected to the left hand switch and carried over to the right so when you put the right hand switch into the up position it earths the left hand and the dip lights come on.
