Good small cheap car recommendations

Wifes car has been written off by a woman reversing into her in a 4WD - no, really

So, we've got around £1000 to spend, she wants a smallish hatchback with great fuel economy and nice and reliable - any good recommendations?

Having owned a few I would steer clear of fiestas - just seem to rust everywhere.

Sister has a Corsa and drives it everywhere with no worries - been extremely reliable actually - how about that with the 1.5 TD isuzu engine?

well i have to say a toyota starlet ep91, 1.3 i have one and have had it for a while now, sold it and bought it back off my sister. it showing a 186,000miles. and can honestly say i have never had such a reliable car, and as i have worked in a toyota dealer we have never had one in for a single fault only servicing and the odd granny clutch wear. now thats what i call bomb proof unlike my mate p reg polo which has 80,000 miles on clock and is a piece of shit! and needed a poo load of things for the mot.

Locost, open at the back so no hatch required, cheap (ish) to buy, easy to maintain, no too bad on fuel if you put on a small carb . . . . . .

Got an M reg 1.6 polo...120,000 miles and its still going strong as a mule...

Only thing that doesnt work is the left hand electric mirror...

Its got an enormous boot for a small car..about 4 times the size of the boot in a KA!

My vote goes to Nissan Micra too

Tough little beasties and quite civilised to drive.

Suzuki Alto

Looks are a bit of an aquired taste / crap but you should get a 2001 / 2002 with low ish miles for a grand.

Will do 50ish urban to the gallon

I have a t reg polo for sale, it was the other halfs untill the twins came along, its diesel, done around 120000 miles, 4 door in red, has a few marks, and a rust bubble but looks tidy, electric windows, mirrors and power steering, been sat on the drive for 8 weeks, it is now out of mot, £1000 takes it away, this car has had loads of money spent on it in the last year!!!

Micra.

You'll get a good one for £1000. Fiestas at that price are usually dogs. Only thing I don't like about Polos I've driven is the brakes, they've been a bit lacking.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
