Zetec Alternator
Here we go, I've searched the forum and read all the threads. Searched Google and eBay along with other kit car sites but am still mightily
confused about alternator choice.
My problem as I sure other people have had is the standard zetec one is too big. It doesn't fit the gap under the inlet and there is now an
engine mount where it originally sat.
Various japanese, denso, charade micra alternatives have been used/suggested but I'm struggling to see how they are connected via the pulley.
Most of them have a V pulley and the Ford systems is a flat mutligroove jobbie. I see on the Sylva site they use a Lucas LRB172 from a Ford Fiasco or
Escort. Does anyone know how big the LRB172 is?
Can anyone give me the definitive advice, or point to the right url for connecting these small alternators and is 40amp output enough for my RedTop
25?
I can make my own brackets its just getting the right parts thats puzzling me.
Cheers,
Steve

look at the pulley end - ther should be a nut holding the pulley on; also a hex keyway in the shaft so hod it as you undo rthe nut.
you have to realise that alternaotr manufacturers make alternators for different car manufactures and models - it would make sens for them to be
fitted with different pulleys as per requirement.

I used the Daihatsu one - just walked into my local motor factors and ordered one with an appropriate pulley to use with my bottom pulley. I bought a
bracket from Tiger but would make one / get a better one made locally next time.

I don;t suppose there is a definitive answer but this worked for me!

We wondered about that with our Micra alt, then just welded the pulley on Seems central and isn't going anywhere, and at a tenner from the
scrappers, if owt goes wrong with it, it gets replaced

I kept the trusty bedford rascal alterantor from my pinto set up and used it on the zetec, removed the V belt pulley and replaced with the multi
groove pulley from the original zetec escort set up.
I had to get a sleeve turned down to make the multi groove sit central, no probs so far.

The 1.8 zetec in the Fiesta XR2i had the bracket on the exhaust side lower down, could you fit the alternator there in your car?
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

My engine came with a huge ali bracket down there with the alternator, pas pump and some over pulley on it. There is an engine mount there now and
there is a chassis rail in the way so I can't get it underneath

I used the CVH flywheel (lighter) so had to find another location for the crank trigger. That seems to be a common problem for me these days!

Once the batteries on the camera are charged up I'll try and get a photo of mine if that will help

I opted for the alternator off a CVH/ DOHC Sierra. This, although not small, fits straight on and has the correct pulley.
One day I may fit a smaller one but this does fine for now and was cheap and new off ebay.

Any idea size wise against the zetec alternator. I've just measured it and its over 6" across!
I'm wondering as well how big the Escort one is as I mentioned above.

Cheers B-W
Dunnell one looks canny, can't imagine I can afford it though! Is that the Lucas LRB172 I mentioned above? Recommended by Sylva.
Does the Renault 5 one come with the correct pulley??

It was noticeably smaller than the Zetec one but about the same as the one that came off the Pinto.
