oil pressure sender and switch

Morning

Having fun at the moment getting oil pressure to register before starting the engine.

If the sender and pressure switch are earthed through the block and PTFE tape is fitted would you expect the gauge to read zero even if pressure was present.

Stupidly I've fitted tape and wondered whether you'd get zero or full deflection if earth wasn't good.

Thanks

Hi,

If the sender isn't earthing it will be registering as an open circuit and so will show no deflection.

As a manual check take the rocker cover off the top of the engine and see if oil is coming out of the sprayer bar over the cam, this will give you an indication to weither ur oil pump is working.

You can always check for continuity between the sender body and earth with a multimeter. If you don't get a reading then remove the ptfe tape.

the ptfe tape will tear at the outer edge of the threads tho, unless there are massive amounts of ptfe tape in I cant see that you would isolate the sender.

Same here. Bit of tape did the job but when you remove these senders the tape is usually ripped through, earthing the sender to the block.
If for whatever reason it's impossible to stop the tape isolating the sender you could attach a seperate earth to the sender body (something like a tabbed washer would be appropriate).
