Fuel gauge problems

Hi, i am having trouble with the audi 80 i have just put thro the mot. Being an audi there are no electrical probs apart from the fuel gauge acting strange.

when travelling at fast constant speed it will over read by about a quarter of a tank, when you slow down again it will slowly return to normal. This means i tend to over read the gauge and suddenly realise i have almost no fuel!

what could be causing this behaviour? i am used to fuel gauges reading higher when going around corners, that has an obvious cause but i can't think of any reason for this behaviour!

any help would be appreciated!

I would suggest voltage regulation is the issue. There is a voltage regulator mounted to the flexible PCB on the back of the gauge unit. I presume it's a B3 or B4 80 - If so they gauge unit is easy to remove with screws above the steering column. That would be my first port of call.

Cheers

Best place to get info on these car is over at Audifans.net. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on the "Series 3" cars over there.

Cheers
