battery in boot - precautions?

hi all going to relocate my battery to the boot area and wonder what precautions I should take?

im a little worried at having it sitting on top of the fuel tank effectively.

Was going to make an alloy tray and double clamp it (little clamps at bottom of battery and a bar across the top), as well as use rubber boots over the terminals.

anything else I can do? Seen fibrelgass battery boxes from RD etc would that be a good idea too?

cheers all. doing this will give me extra space up front as well as pushing some weight to the back

You might consider shrinking the battery down to a tiny gel type - you could stick it anywhere you want then

Typically here it must be enclosed in a battery box that is vented to the outside of the vehicle. This lets the potential hydrogen gases out so your battery box doesnt go boom.
Also a battery cut-off switch is required to race here with a relocated battery.

boot is open to the air anyway so venting shouldnt be a problem.

what's the fuel tank made of? i'd be wary of putting an acid filled battery near an aluminium tank.

mine in the indy has leaked before and corroded a chunk out of the retaining strap. luckily it was 3mm thick, and onto the glassfibre battery tray.

i'd be happier with a glassfibre box, and a gel battery.

a rear ender doesn't bear thinking about..........as the acid splashes up the back of your neck.......

the tank is stainless and under the stainless boot floor.

I get your point though.

My tin top has the battery in the back just behind the fuel tank. Its under the floor in the boot. Its not in a box or anything.

So did every "proper" Mini.

avoid wearing waking socks with the metliased silver fibres and they may short out the battery.

can you not fit a small gel bettery in the passenger footwell?

and does the tank take up all the boot space so that you cannot place battery to the side of it?

cannot say I have ever come across a car with battery over the tank - as ^^^ say, I would not be happy with such a situation.

You will also need to consider the size of the battery cable to accomodate the longer run to the starter motor.

Considering all this what do you see as the benefit of putting the battery in the boot?

Regards

Ian
