VG loom to sierra instruments.

Fitting sierra pod to vg loom-I have 12 pin plug instead of 13 on plan.loom has 19 wires not 18 on plan.
The 12 wires on my instrument binnacle are as follows;
and have been connected
to;

blue/wht blue/wht
yell/blk
grn/brn
blk/wht brn/grn
grnx2
w/brn blue/green
brn/blk grn/blk
grn/blk grn/wht
yell/brnx2 blk/yell
blue yell/brn
brn blackx2
grn/grey

As you can see there are 4 wires on binnacle I am still unable to mate to loom.On the loom I am left with the following wires;
wht/blk
brn/wht
red
white
greenx4
The loom says there are 3 of the 4 green not used -how do you know which ones?-and that there are 2 white not used-is one of these actually brown /white?

I have also now realised my stalks for wipers have rear wash wipe facility so how would this affect stalk wiring-are there any wires to br deleted.

Anyone in Suffolk know what they are doing with this scenario-help!!!!!!!!!!!!
My thanks to Northy and CairB already, regards Mike.

Hi Mike,

I'm in the same stage as you, trying to make some sense of the steering stalk wiring, i bought my loom from MK and its slowed things down considerably. try checking my post under online sierra haynes manual- under electrics there is a second post that shows the steering stalk plugs wiring a tiger builder used which may solve some questions.

Hi Mike,

I'll check when I get home for you. I have the Sierra pod wired up to the VG loom at the moment. Not sure its 100%, but sure I can help.

Take it you got my email then?

Hi Mike, sorry been trying to email you, but my Virgin service is crap at the moment, and I can't even email them to complain!!!!!

Right here goes:

VG Loom Ford Sierra Cluster

Green/Red Black/Green
Green/White Black/White
Blue/Green Brown/White
Red Grey/Green
Green/Black Brown/Black
2x Black/Yellow Brown/Yellow
White/Brown Brown/Green
Green Black/Yellow
Blue/White Blue/white
2x Black Brown
White/Black 2x Green
Brown/Yellow Blue

Hope that makes sense. I've just connected mine up for now with some mains connector block, as I'm not planning on using the Sierra cluster, I'm just using it for the warning lights at the moment.

You can connect any Green wire, they're all the same. But cover the ends of the others as they are live fused feeds.

Can't guarentee that the wirings 100% right, I've not seen the tacho move yet, as the engines not run for long enough! But the warning lights work, eg oil pressure, ignition, main beam, and the cluster lights up when you turn the lights on

Good luck, if you need any more help, give me a shout.

Cheers

vg loom to column.

Right then,i have connected up ignition,dip/indics,wiper/lights however have ended up with a brown wire and black and yellow spare and not connected. The brown comes from the dip switch and was soldered to several other brown wires -where does this live??the black/yellow is from wipers-where does this go-the colours on my wiper switch are different to vg plan.
Importantly i still have 1 terminal to connect up on the 6 pin block which is to the black wire-what have you got.
Can I also confirm the white spade goes to where brown spade pushes on rhs of column and that horn wires connect to wires that were in a 2 pin plug.
Thanks to Northy(your indics are wired reversal to vg loom i.e o/s to n/s according to your notes.)Wicket, cairB for help so far-godsend!!Best regards Mike.
P.s. i did put old distributor with points on as a way round wiring up amplifier but now wonder do I need "biscuit" to get rev
counter to work?

Hi Mike

I'm not the wiring expert it's my son. I will get him to look at the odd brown wire tomorrow & let you know. I do remember something about this wire when wiring our loom. As a matter of interest we used a Luego loom with Sierra switches, it went together pretty well. Its been powered up (no smoke) all functions now work OK. We had 2 errors, 1 wrong wire colour, 1 missing earth return. You have new e-mail as well.

Mike,

Brown was generally 0v or ground on mine and usually a group were soldered together then connected to chassis ground. Your spare brown possibly be the ground point, you should be able to trace it back to the soldered joint and verify that it is grounded, else connect the brown to a good connection on the chassis. There are also some like this around the steering column that are used by the switches to operate the headlight relays.

There are possibly several yellow / blacks associated with the wipers depending on the model, e.g intermittent control. Mine are disconnected as I don't have wipers.

From memory the horn push button just grounds one side of the horn to operate.

I think that the green wire to tacho is just from the coil low tension that goes via a suppressor.

Cheers,

Colin

Don't know if this helps... but i been making my own wiring loom, and i worked out what all the different colours do on the sierra loom.
These are what the colours goto off the sierra clocks.

Brown Wire is Earth
Black/Yellow is Alternator Warning Light apparently. (But does go to several other systems too)
Green is tacho (happens to be the slightly lighter coloured green)

Mike,

I have just returned from the garage
Connect the brown wire from the Sierra switches to a good Earth point on your chassis under the scuttle area somewhere.

Connect the black wire from the VG loom (6 way connector) to the same good Earth point.

Can't help with the Yellow/Black, as I've not fitted a windscreen, sorry.

Yes the horn is the two pin plug, you should have two purple (maybe one purple/black can't remember) wires in the VG loom, connect these two to the horn wires, either way round.

I have just realised tonight that there is no power wire running to the front of the car for the radiator fan. I think this should be a fused permanent live (ie not switched off with ignition). I suggest you put one in now, as I'm going to have to remove most of the loom from the engine bay to do so at the weekend

Yeah, you passed the little test I set you! (I mean, sorry, forgot about that!) My indicators are reversed, because the loom runs round the opposite side of the car (offside of engine bay) and it was easier than extending wires!

Cheers

vg loom

Top Guy,I actually feel Im gettin somewhere (and Im not a complete twit!)-obviously my sierra loom /switches are very close to yours-Do I need the amp.from bay or do you reckon I can connect up vg loom and get everything working -have you an amp(black biscuit as is technically known)and if not how is yours wired.I have pointed distrib. now fitted in hope to make whole process less complicated.I still have starter area to connect up so any advice again welcome.I havent w/screen either so i suppose should not worry too much about wiper plug!
Mike (a bit happier now).
