Where are the electical wiring diagrams?

Don't we have any diagrams for beginners to wire their car up themselves? Like a step by step, circuit by circuit guide, with explanations of what each is doing and why. I see folk struggling to use pre-made looms but feel their missing out on a fun and interesting part of the build and ending up with something in their car they don't really understand.

There are some provided by the helpful man at Westfield world

http://www.westfield-world.com/wiring_menu.html

Plenty more have been posted on here over the years - but as ever the search facility makes them hard to find.

Anyone who can build a car should be able to sit down and logically think through each electrical system in turn...

All you are doing is either applying power to something, or not!

E.g. The headlight circuit....Where is the power comming from? (The headlight fuse), What are the conditions of its opperation? (the headlight switch must be opperated),....

Its not rocket science, part of the challenge is trying to visalise whats going on...

If you take each system of the car individually and draw them down on a piece of paper layed out in a logical way you can then work out how many bits of wire and what size are required, lay them in the car, then start labeling and connecting up as per your sketches...

Yeah that westy ones not bad though a bit OTT if someone just wanted the basics, plus it doesn’t explain how it works.

I had considered spending some time writing out a really good one like an idiots guide to wiring a car. I’m weird and like doing that kind of thing

i've wired up my brother beetle before with no wiring diagrams, it's not that hard to do. I'm just starting out on my build, and it's taking me a bit to get my head round the R1 loom as it's already made, just need adjusting for car use

I think one of the problems I encountered was the lack of a 'physical' layout diagram. Schematics are ok but when trying to understand my Tiger loom it was a nightmare because the scematic bared very little resemblance to the physical layout....

Or maybe I'm just fick

There should ideally be two circuit diagrams, identical in connection but with different layouts.

First is a logical diagram where individual circuits are laid out so they are easy to understand.

Second is a physical diagram which is laid out with the components in roughly the right position relative to where they sit on the car and the connections drawn as close to the way the loom is laid out. This is the kind of spaghetti you see in a haynes manual which is useful for installation.

I am currently drawing up some wiring diagrams for my car, so when I am done I will up load them to my blog thing..

I prefer to work with a diagram, as when running wires its easy to get distracted and forget a wire, and end up redoing things as it hasn't been thought about properly.. and at least then you can work out all the relays switchs and lights to buy etc

here is a good read on how to wire a car wire your car
