80's Sportscars
I had a great day out on Sunday, helping a friend campaign a couple of cars at Donington in the HSCC meeting there.
He races a Lotus 23C and a Lotus 7 in the Guards Cup and the Historic Roadsports Championships respectively. There is also a 70's Roadsports
Championship, which sees cars as diverse as Porsche 928's racing against 240Z's and Lotus 7's.
Well as of next year they are going to launch an 80's Roadsports Championship. I'm awaiting a full copy of the rules, but basic
eligibility seems to be registered between 1980 and 1989, must be road legal and MOT'd.

Question is, what sportscar would be well suited to this new Championship? It needs to be RWD (for me!), non-turbo and not horrendously expensive to
buy parts for / but equally have a good range of tuning parts available!?

Got to be something from BMW, shirley? Or an older kit car perhaps?
Unless you have much more money than me! In which case something from TVR should prove "entertaining"!

All depends if you want to be competitive or just have a good time.
A Robin reliant would be quite a laugh or a 2CV (as well as an unpredictable moving hazard  ), you could pull along side one of the Ferrari at the
start and rev your engine menacingly 
A sliding photo finish on the roof (fix titanium sliders to the roof for some serious sparks) what style

Lotus Carlton and Sierra Cossie are out, no turbo's allowed!
The Robin and 2CV don't count as "sportscars" in any sense of the word Mr Whippy!
So that leaves the BMW, which might appeal. But I was thinking more lightweight, low cost and high power to weight ratio.
There was a race on Sunday where a 7 litre Mustang was being hassled by an Imp (or it might have been a Chamoix) and came third to a 105e and an
Anglia so it's not all about size!

1980s? - check
Road legal and MOT'd - doable
RWD - check

Still, a nice RWD 80s car. I saw one at Le Mans - in 1980, I think.

Id be seriously looking at E30 325 (175bhp) or M3 (195 - 215bhp for decent money - Evo sport too expensive). Surprisingly cheap and tough. As a road
car they are full of overweight carpets and trim just begging to be stripped out. If capacity is limited for the classes then also look out for a
320is (basically a std bodied despecced M3 for Euro market), or even the 318is had a good name (130 odd bhp) - only prob will be the field will be
flooded with hot hatches in this capacity area. Then you are talking about Golf Gti's, 205's etc and the choice is silly.
Any decent Audi's or are the good ones all 4WD and turbo?
Depends on what budget and what the rest of the field will go for. Old Alfa twin cams should be pokey - 'suppose car will need lots of work
first though.

How about something from the Porsche stable.
Rear wheel drive, none turbo variants.
924, 944 or 928 would all qualify.

The XR4x4 is non-turbo (I know not RWD) but you do get an engine that's common and tuneable and picking one up is going to be dirt cheap
definately made them in 88/89.
Lotus Esprit, not all of them were turbos. Bit expensive if it goes wrong.
Old 911 although it might be a bit tail-happy.
Did the Mk II RS2000s get into the 80s? Would be a bit slow without tuning and they are getting more and more expensive now due to their scarcity but
they are RWD.

Reminds me of a car I saw getting built for an ex-Porsche owner who got a little annoyed by being lapped by a Ford Fiesta and so now was getting made
one for himself

Definetly has to be the toyota corolla. AE86. Comes with a 4age Considered to be one of the best cheap sports cars in japan.

2.8i Capri. Rear wheel drive, loads of half decent ones about, cheap, easy to maintain. Get a special and it's alredy got an LSD.
