Starting

So....my Zetec engined Phoenix started to play up when starting..would click the soleniod and then start next turn of the key, this has got worse and worse till it didn't start at all.

Changed the starter motor which worked fine the first 3 times then it starting clicking the soleniod and then nothing at all. Checked the cabling, re-made the positive terminal from the battery. Ran a jump cable from the engine to the negative terminal to rule out earth problems and still nothing. Charged the battery last night and the same thing this morning.

When you turn the key to start the fuel pump and every other electrical device stops working. When you come of the starter position it all comes back to life as happy as Larry.

I guess it must be the switch ....but it does seem to be earthing out the battery

Any ideas ???

if it was earthing out the battery I think you'd see smoke

Have you tried just shorting out the solenoid terminal on the starter (screw driver to the + cable) to see if the starter will turn normally?

I’d check the fuses one by one, then a meter on the ignition switch back terminals to see if they are live in all the correct switch positions.

Tried another battery?

What voltage do you measure at the battery terminals when you turn the key? If it drops below 9-10V then it's a dead battery.

Do get a little wisp of smoke off the positive terminal.

I'll check the starter with the screwdriver.... Might be a dead battery as it was reading 15.4Volts when it was fully charged which is high (!)

last time I shorted out the battery I got a bit more than a wisp, the wire cut through the carpet...

I had a similar problem with starting a 1600 crossflow. It turned out to be the solenoid I only found the problem when trying to remove the wire from the starter side it just fell to bits. I know your starter will be different but its worth checking your solenoid even if its new especially if its reconditioned. Also from what you say the other electrical systems shut down while cranking, this could be normal as when you start most cars the radio goes off and gauges dont operate. This could be due to the amount of current being drawn by the starter. Did you check the battery straight after it came off charge if so check it after it has been standing for a while. Hope you get it fixed soon .

Battery drops to 0.5 volts when trying to crank (!)

Very strange as this drives the fuel pump and everything else fine.

New battery required

Are you putting the meter test probes directly onto the lead terminals of the battery? If so the battery is well and truly dead!
