Speedo Not Working....

SVA Thursday, MOT today. Mostly OK except my ETB electronic speedo doesn't work.

It turns on, I've set the pulses per mile and the ligth works so the speedo must be OK. But no speed reading.

I've got the light duty sensor with 2 magnets.

Is it possible to test the sensor? Gap is 3mm so that's OK

Thanks

What light be this? Is it the dashboard lamp?. The speedo will take a 12 V and 0 V supply to power t he electronics and stepper motor inside. Whne it is powerd up, you should hear the stepper motor being reset and the neeld move a tiny bit. Then the LCD mileage counter should illuminitate. I don't know why any lamp should come on - I am assuming it is a dial face, like the Racetech.

Yes it is. Firstly do you have sensor that is compatible with the speedo and wire correctly? Is the senor reluctance type or hall effect? The former has built in magnet - put a paper clip next to it and it should pick it up - and will detect ferromagnetic lumps whizzing past it such as teeth on a steel wheel or steel bolt heads. The latter detects magenticc fields so needs to have magnets whizz part it. The smaller the gap between the two the better.

there is a thrioid type - reed switch, as used on bike speedo that also requires a magnet to close the contacts. I'd be surprised if you have one of these fitted.

Without knowing details of sensor, I cannot diagnose any further.

But you can test the sensor by moving magnet or bolt close to it.

Youo can aslo test the speedo by supplying the same voltage that t he sensor would provide.

Thanks
