megajolt???

im a bit blind to all this megajolt/squirt stuff ! im under the impression its a replacement for dizzy ignition? am i right? if so am i right to be thinking about fitting it to a 1300 xflow, and if so whats the difference if any between squirt and jolt and which is best for my engine?
how much can i expect to pay for a full kit?

cheers in advance

In a nutshell, megajolt is ignition side only (e.g. pinto with bike carbs) and megasquirt does ignition and fueling (e.g. engine with injectors)

I'm sure someone will be along soon to give a better explaination (I'm still very much learning about this subject myself)

Megasquirt is as Benzine says, for fuel and sparks.

Megajolt works in conjunction with a few scrapyard Ford bits (coilpacks and EDIS unit (little black box)) and a toothed timing wheel and allows the timing "map" to be changed to suit whichever engine it's fitted to.
You can either map it yourself, or, if it's a popular engine, you can download a map for it.

We fitted it to our old crossflow, it ran much better, the sparks were visibly fatter and we adjusted the map for less advance under 500rpm which aided starting.

A fully assembled Megajolt from a member on here is around £90-ish ? another £20 for scrapyard bits, then all you need is a trigger-wheel.

You then get to plug your car into a laptop and play "F1"

The advantage on the ignition over a dizzy is two fold... much better control of the advance via the mapping and the ford coil pack giving a huge increase in voltage over a standard coil.

I bought a megajolt for mine but now wish I'd spent a bit more to get the megasquirt for future upgrades

I fitted this to a 1300 xflow, well worth it, check out my photo archive should you want any ideas.

One big advantage of Megajolt is that you can remove the distributor. This gives you (a) a whole load of space on the side of the engine, and (b) allows you to fit horizontal webers or bike carbs without having to worry about clearing the top of the dizzy cap.

Apart from that, you can expect a better spark, better reliability (no points to keep on adjusting), and better control over your ignition timing.

You can also have 2 ignition maps that can be switched by the driver. I've got one for regular unleaded, and another for super unleaded (not that I can afford that any more... ).

I've fitted MJ with bike carbs, and I'm very pleased with the way it runs.

Megasquirt was originally for fuel injection only, then it got modified for ignition as well. FI only can be a headache to set up, and FI + ignition doubly so - there are major caution messages on the website that deals with FI + ignition! As far as I can tell, it requires a few more sensors on the engine, and a fair bit of technical knowledge to get it set up correctly.

At least one member of the forum bypassed Megasquirt and went straight onto the Emerald ECU - more expensive, but you can get the system set up by the designer, and there's a Haynes book for it too!

Megajolt was one of the best mods i did on my car. Mounting VR sensor and trigger wheel can be a head scratcher but once completed the rest is easy.

Standard car - OE electronic ignition with dizzy works well.
Modified engine - MJLJ is good compliment.
