Have to say I quite enjoyed the TG Africa special. I was amazed at how well the BMW and Volvo did on the off road sections!
So, faced with the challenge and £1,500, what car would you take and why?
I think the Scooby was probably the perfect choice myself.
Has to be an estate car I take it? to keep in with the TG rules?
I would have insisted on 4WD, so either an Audi, maybe a subaru outback to gain some height over the imprezza.
Volvo 245 for under a grand, use the change to raise it, sump guard and fat tyres on steel wheels.

Subaru Forester - sits within the rules of a true estate car, hard as nails, and probably the only car with a reduction low range gearbox.

Fails on not being an estate though. An Outback or Forrester would be the tool for the job if it falls within the rules, though the Forrester in particular may be crossing the divide to an SUV.
The V70 XC is a good call, the Impreza Sportwagon falls down on load space (not such an issue for Hammond!) which is a strength of the Volvo and with 4WD it should be perfect.
A 4x4 Octavia might be ok, and there's a couple of Passat 4Motions within budget on eBay.
Surely the point is to take something silly not something sensible..... Thats why James May's volvo was such a good choice... utterly utterly stupid and yet it still managed it!

OK, there was some good footage of them looning around in the mud and on rough roads but what went on off camera? Repairs galore but they certainly didnt wash the cars!!!! Interesting that they showed the back up and film team a couple of times. Noticed that the Scooby had fresh wheels all round at one stage. Did Hamster ACTUALLY repair the wishbone himself? I doubt it. I thought it was a tad tame realy.

Citroen Xantia/BX/CX/XM/C5. I'm built for comfort and not speed and having spent much of my childhood driving across campsites in citroens thats
what I'd go for. Yes they're quite complex so I'd have to learn how to fix it but for the money you could get a few C5 or Xantias,
I'm not sure about the other two as they're not so common and I bought a car, and sold a car recently so I'm avoiding all classifieds
for the present.
You'd be pushing it to get an estate for the money but an X-type would be fun for that kind of thing with AWD and a nice interior. A Rover 75 is
another British option.
MK 3 Escort estate. I took one to Morocco once. Now cheap enough to bin if it breaks, economical, fast enough I suppose and lighter than a 245 Volvo if u've got to push it.
Range Rover P38 cos I like them.

As much as it pains me to say it the subaru came out looking fantasic to me on those dirt roads dragging the other two out, hammond certainly wasnt
holding back.
As mentioned though, I wonder what repairs actually went on off camera?
