Need a new TV
mookaloid - 24/3/13 at 12:16 AM

I have had a Sony 40" LCD tv (kdl-40v3000) for about 6 years now and whilst it has been reliable, it has developed the shadow problem which seems to affect a lot of these particular models. I have tried to find a non broadcasting channel to leave it on overnight with the snow effect but this TV won't show such a channel - it just says not available.

Having had a bit of a google it seems that there are plenty of tv's with various issues like this.

Question is are there any good quality brands out there that don't seem to go wrong just after the warranty expires?

I will be looking for a new one but don't want to have to replace it in 2 or 3 years.

What should I go for? plasma or LCD?

40 inch or bigger - any suggestions please?

Cheers

M

I forget what to search for, but u can download and burn to dvd, the static signal you get on non broadcasting channels. Might do you for now. Otherwise, LG

LG & Samsung both get my vote. I have been impressed by the quality of both.

Size depends on how far away you sit.
Im bias towards the panasonic plasmas, they always look good.

Costco have a 70" Samsung 3d smart tv in for just under £2000.

Looks the dogs doodars and I wish I needed a new one...

Samsung make fantastic TVs. We have an LED, Smart, 3D Samsung TV. Great picture, and a fantastic looking machine. If you do some hunting around, you can find them for a similar price to the LG equivalent, but I would argue they are far superior in quality.

LED is the way forward in my opinion purely for the contrast ratio. I've been very impressed with Samsung kit in the last couple of years.

As has been said, Costco is a good bet.

I have a Philips 42" LCD that I've had for 6 years, maybe even 7. (Old enough that it doesn't have a digital tuner!) It's been spot on. I'd love to upgrade but just can't justify it whilst this one keeps going.

I've got a 40" Samsung smart LED TV (bought 2 years ago for £499 I think), and it's fabulous. Make sure you get one with Freeview HD and you're laughing.

The smart apps are really useful as it means you can watch iPlayer, lovefilm, 4od etc. all straight from the TV (and all on one remote).

LED also means it's nice and slim - bonus points for good looks

I'm still of the opinion that where available plasma still offers a better picture than LED and if buying a plasma I wouldnt look beyond panasonic, the market leaders for years now.

I have a TX-P42ST30B which I love.
