Haynes roadster sump modification advice

I have removed the sump from my CVH donor engine, cut the required amount off the base and cut grooves in the front edge for oil to flow into new reservoir, as per the book. My question is why only cut grooves, why not just cut out the front part so oil can flow freely into the newly created reservoir? I'd be grateful for an explanation from any one who knows.

Thanks

It slows the oil flow when braking hard that way the pick up pipe gets the oil longer
When i did mine i cut the front out a fitted a hinge so the oil can come back easy but not flow forward so easy
My engine is a pinto

Sump mod

I did my pinto, but didn't follow the book. I chopped it to make it level with the bell housing. Made a rectangular box keeping the width the same and compensating for lost capacity at the front. Welded it all together and removed unecessary metal from the inside. welded 3 baffle plates to the bottom, which have 20mm holes in (not in line) to allow for controlled oil movement. To this I bolted the top baffle(with rivnuts) again drilled 20mm holes. Also a large hole for the pickup strainer. I used 2mm steel not the book 1mm. I took about 4cm off the pickup tube. Ok, it is quite heavy but very strong. If I hit a raised cover It will probably break the cover.
