Haynes steering position

I am building a Haynes with mostly MX5 Bits and the steering column is very different from the Sierra.

Will someone measure their car and tell me :-
How high is the steering wheel (centre) above the floor?
How far back is the wheel from the transverse tubes?
Or how far is it from the wheel centre to the rear bulkhead?

sit in the car and locate it where it is comfortacle for you as it is you that we be driving it. If thr collum offers addustable height then take account of the adjustment available and set the steering in the middle this will than cater for other drivers

Hi Dave,
There's a fairly limited number of options where to put the wheel without modifying the chassis rails.
It still took me bl00dy ages to figure out the best place for it though!
Ideally you want to fit your seat and place the wheel in a position that works for you.

If it helps I placed the column so that it just rests on TR9, and pulled it back until the UJ just clears TR8,
which leaves the centre of the wheel about 54cm above the floor.







The position is pretty much perfect for me and my seating postion, but be warned I am a bit of a short ar5e, so it might not work for everyone.

Your pictures confirm exactly what I was juggling with.

JPS, Austin Man and Steve M - I had done exactly what you recommended and found that the column was trying to go through one of the tubes!
My car is primarily a track day build so I was seated as low as possible. However with the chassis up off the ground, donor steering wheel, and no scuttle it is difficult to set sight lines.

I will now set the column to book height with provision to lower to my position.

A car in for set up today, My old Leader and Skov all produce a similar result: 85mm higher than my estimated setting, hence my possibility of having to cut into a tube.

I was hoping a builder of Sierra donor would confirm what height/depth to dash the book build would return.
